Need a refresher on infectious waste management?

Included among the many hospital staffing issues created by the pandemic is a concern that turnover and increased use of temporary staff can create inconsistencies in handling infectious and hazardous waste materials. The webinar, available on demand, answers key questions about the importance of proper waste segregation, what is and isn’t included in DHEC’s definition of infectious waste, what should and should not be placed into regulated medical waste (RMW) containers, and what needs to be incinerated.

Appropriate medical management is about more than regulatory compliance. It also protects staff and patients, safeguards the environment, and reduces unnecessary costs.

“There’s a lot of gross stuff in healthcare that may not necessarily be infectious waste,” said Tim Staiano, materials management director, adding that putting those materials into an RMW container can add unnecessary cost. He noted, however, that hospitals may have specific policies about what is considered RMW.
