Since the federal No Surprises Act (NSA) was signed into law in 2021, nearly a dozen hospitals have been fined for violating national price transparency rules. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) fined four hospitals in August for alleged price transparency violations, according to the CMS website. Those fines were levied over a two-day period and ranged from $56,940 to nearly $1 million. CMS also fined three hospitals in July, marking the first time the agency has fined hospitals in back-to-back months.
Those actions bring the total number of hospitals fined to 11 and clearly show CMS is aggressively enforcing the NSA. Atlanta-based Northside Hospital had the dubious honor in June 2022 of being the first health system in the nation to be fined (more than $1 million!) for violating the relatively new law.
